AYURVEDIC YOGA MASSAGE
A Unique Approach
Ayurvedic yoga massage is a unique system of bodywork developed in the early 80s by Master Kusum Modak of Pune, India. Master Kusum combined her knowledge of traditional Ayurvedic massage with Iyengar yoga-inspired stretches that she learnt from BKS Iyengar, the founder of the style of practice.
AYM is a floor-based treatment using a mat to allow freedom of movement and flow. It incorporates deep tissue massage, using classic Ayurvedic strokes, yoga stretches and co-ordinated breath-work.

Regular treatments are recommended to enjoy the physical benefits as well as help clients connect with their breathing which can take some practice initially.

Pure sesame oil is used, which has a nourishing, calming and warming effect on the skin. It’s also good for all three doshas – according to Ayurveda, they define our makeup and are responsible for our mental and emotional health.

Calamus powder, which is the powdered root of the Acorus Calamus plant and widely used in Ayurveda, is also used for its detoxifying properties. When mixed with a little oil, it helps to improve circulation and draw toxins from the body.

The massage requires trust between the therapist and client, working in partnership throughout the treatment to create a meditative and open practice.
